Starting Your Lessons

Are your classes free?

Yes – they are free.

Where do I register for classes?

Come to St Aidan’s Church at 10am on Tuesday or Thursday (during school term time only). please see the address on Contact page.

When can I start my course?
You can join a class at any time, if there is space. If the class you need is full, we will telephone you when there is room.
Do I need to take a test?
All new learners take a short test when they register to see what level of English they have. If you do not know English yet, don’t worry – we just need your name, address, telephone number and a few more details, such as where you are from and your language.
How old are your learners?
You will need to be aged 18 and over to come to our classes.
What about children?

We cannot have children or babies in class. We do have a crèche for children who are more than a year old but not at school. If you need a place in the crèche for your child or children, tell us when you come to register.

Times and Location

Where are your classes?
The classes are at St Aidan’s Church on Roundhay Road or at Trinity United Church, which is just two minutes’ walk away. If you are new, come to St Aidan’s first!
How many classes do you have?

We have a Pre-Entry class for learners with very little English, two Beginners’ classes for people who know some English (Entry level 1); two Elementary classes (Entry level 2); one Intermediate class (Entry level 3); and one Upper-Intermediate (Level 1).

Do your classes run during school holidays?
No – our classes only run during Leeds school terms. If you need to know when these are, you can visit Leeds City Council website: www.leeds.gov.uk/residents/Pages/School-calendar.aspx
Can I change the time of my class?
No – the classes are always on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 10 to 12 noon. If you can only come to one class each week, that is fine, but do tell us!

Class Rules and Attendance

What do I need to bring to class?
If you have a pen and paper bring them, but if not don’t worry as we can supply them. You do not need any books, but a dictionary would be useful – if you have one, bring it with you!
Can I speak my own language in class?

We try to use only English in the classroom, but you can chat to others who speak your own language before and after class (and sometimes if you do not understand in English).

What if I am late to class?
Try to come to class on time, or a few minutes early so that you do not miss anything. We know that this isn’t always possible, though, so you can come to class at any time.
What if I need to leave class early?

If you need to leave class early, for example, to go to an appointment, that is fine. If possible, tell your teacher that you will need to leave early.

What if I can’t come to class?
If you miss classes because you are ill or working, or because you are away, no problem, but tell us that you will not be coming. Your place will not be given to anyone else.
How many classes can I miss?

If you miss four classes and do not tell us that you can’t come, then your place may be given to someone else. We often have a waiting list for places!
